Q 1 – What's the SLS System's FOCUS and why do we need Study Skills ?
A – As its FOCUS, the SLS MISSION is to
1) Help students learn good study skills to learn any school subject and ideas so students can get high grades
2) Give teens & parents the tools to work together for student success in school and later in life
3) Help students Take Charge & Responsibility to get the Power and Control for their own Success
4) Help students learn to work more effectively on their own, with a study partner or with a group or team
5) Help students prepare for careers by developing good learning skills
Why Study Skills are more important for today's students
> Students won't always get teachers, instructors or professors who explain class subjects and ideas in ways he or
she understands best in each grade or class. Students must learn to be more self-directed and self-motivated using
study skills that help them learn ideas better with any teacher, instructor or professor, in any class, in any school
> Even when students get some teachers, instructors or professors who are interesting, motivating and explain ideas
according to students' learning styles, chances are they won't get the same type of instruction in all other classes
they take and many struggle to stay interested, understand and learn with other instructors.
> Students often need help to understand some classes, school subjects and information they must learn. They may
need more help and resources to learn ideas than a school or learning center has to offer. They may learn well in one
grade or grade level but not learn as well in another level
> Today's students must learn new ideas and information as they prepare for a job/career, advance at work, change
jobs or careers and get more education and training later. They need the study skills to learn all of their lives.
> Today's students need new and better tools and skills to learn, deal with, manage, use and combine ideas and
information they get in many settings and from many sources to function well and have an EDGE in today's and
tomorrow's world! Too many don't know how to manage all the information we get today from many sources
(in traditional and online classes, discussion groups, teleconferencing, web casts, webinars, workshops, seminars,
conferences, presentations – – from books, periodicals, publications, magazines, articles, e-books, audio books,
audio presentations, podcasts, video demonstrations or instructions, CDs, DVDs, downloads, online, phone and web
apps, social networking – – with tutors, teachers, instructors, professors, presenters, etc.)
> Today's students use many kinds of gadgets to find, organize and use information available to them. They also
collaborate and communicate with others in many different ways. They will use new gadgets and tools over time to do
all of this but still need to learn basic principles to find, organize and use information, collaborate and communicate
with others. Today's students must be ready for they changes they find Tomorrow!
When students learn good study skills, they do better in class with more types of teachers and professors – great ones,
good ones and not so good ones. Students do better in many different types of secondary and higher education schools.
In college, professors are not as concerned with students' grades so students must get high grades on their own, with
good and bad habits. Students don’t have parent and teacher support so students must figure out how to make the grade on
their own. Students attend the colleges or schools he or she can get into or afford. The expertise and teaching ability of the
professors vary from school to school and program to program. The services, programs, majors, resources and connections
each college or higher education institution is able to give for students varies. Students must learn to do more on their own
to get ahead in higher education schools.
Learning how to learn helps you no matter what job or career you have. When you learn how to use study skills, you
can handle many areas of life much better. Learning to use your abilities and skills and getting motivated helps you
become successful. SLS gives students (teens, young & older adults) the study skills and school subject tools they
need to succeed in school and prepare for life.

Q 3 – What's the SLS Study Skills System based on?
A – SLS Study Skill Tools are based on solid learning, memory and perception research and principles from the fields
of – Education, Psychology, Brain Research, Learning, Perception, etc.
1) SLS Strategies are structured on BRAIN BASED LEARNING – How the Brain and Body Learn Best
The Brain and Body use our sensing system to learn about the world, others, ideas, and information. SLS uses
the Research about Brain Learning to structure the Strategies in the SLS Study System. We are just starting to
learn so much more about the brain and how we can use its power for our human benefit
See BRAIN POWER for more ideas of this process
2) SLS Strategies and Study Tools are structured on the SLS Learning Principle:
SLS Triple ‘A’ Way – AAA – Your Attitude (views) + Your Aptitudes (skills) = Your Altitude (success)
When you have good Attitudes and views about learning, you, your school, teachers, what you study, etc. and
have good Aptitudes, learning and study skills, you get good Altitudes, good grades, results from your efforts,
goals you reach – your Success in school.
You can control & change your Attitudes (beliefs and views). You can develop your Aptitudes (skills, abilities).
Then you get the Altitudes (good results, good grades, success)
See SLS METHOD for a fuller explanation of this principle
3) SLS uses a Multi-Sensory Learning Approach with many study strategies, which use many senses to learn
Our 5 Senses – Visual (seeing), Auditory (hearing), Kinesthetic (move/touch), Olfactory (smell), Taste
7 Intelligences (Dr. Gardner, Harvard University) for many types of Learners – Linguistic, Logic/Math
Body/Kinesthetic, Musical, Spatial, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal
Left & Right Brain Strategies for Male & Female Thinking
See CORE STRATEGIES for more details about the Multi-Sensory Learning Approach
4) SLS uses 3 Basic Strategies – Core Strategies – Advanced Strategies – Specific Strategies
Core – Strategies at the heart of every grade
Advanced – Core Strategies that are explained to a greater depth for higher grades
Specific – Strategies for specific grades and learning situations
SLS focuses on giving Students and Parents the Tools to work together for student success since studies
show that over 50% of student achievement comes from the efforts of students and parents working together,
who work with teachers and are involved in school.
Teachers can also get Books and tools to coordinate their teaching efforts with the strategies that students and
parents have and use
See SLS FOUNDATION for more details about all of these points
5) SLS uses Success Strategies used by students who get As and Bs in class, in Middle School, High School, a
1 - 3-year and 4-year College and those who are successful at work. There are many ways to be successful. If we
learn from those who've been successful in school and in many areas of life, the better chance we have to be
successful in our own lives.

Q 5 – What affects and helps Student Success and Achievement ?
A – Studies show what affect students Success & Achievement in School:
. (Peter Hutchinson, 2006 – see RESOURCES) especially for average and middle class attitude students
Studies show students from middle class minded families can learn from many types of teachers and get more help
from parents and others for their success in school)
A) 25% comes from the school – programs & classes offered, facilities, staff, services & help available
B) 25% comes from the teacher – teacher/professor style, teaching effectiveness, interest in & motivation of students
C) 50% comes from the student and the parents – student study skills, motivation, interest in school subjects,
abilities; parent involvement with the school, time working with students, helping & supporting students
25% of the effect on student’s good grades and success in school comes from the school – administration, principal, school
staff, dean, school buildings and building conditions, classes, internships and programs offered, libraries, resources available.
Good schools help students do better and achieve (Studies show that schools help at risk students or minority students in cities
the most since they're often behind in their academic skills and grades. Students with middle class attitudes get more help
from parents and others at home)
Not all students are able to live in neighborhoods with good schools. That all depends on where their parents choose to live
or are able to live and what colleges accept their application. We go to the schools we get or are able to attend. Sometimes
they're good, sometimes they are average and sometimes they are not very helpful us.
---------------------------------------
25% of the effect on students’ good grades, achievement and success comes from teachers – teachers who teach well, know
how to inspire and keep students motivated, excited and help them understand ideas, tie ideas together to understand them
better – good teachers help students do better in class, inspire and motivate students
"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."
–- William Arthur Ward
In each class, some students get ‘As & Bs’. Some students are smart or this class subject makes more sense and is
interesting or some use better study skills, strategies and techniques. The teacher or professor teaches in way that matches
the students' learning style.
Some students get Cs and Ds since students are not so interested or smart in that subject, and they don’t have good study
skills and habits. They may not get teachers who can teach or hold students' interest according to students' learning style.
Students may not have the foundation knowledge for that subject so ideas don't make as much sense. Students may not get
as much support at home as they need to succeed. (Parents may not really know what to do).
When students get good teachers, they may only have them for a class, a semester or a year which is often not long enough to
keep students motivated and interested in school. Then students get average teachers they don't understand well , who don't
make as much sense and don't teach according to students' learning style – though they may teach for other students' learning
styles and hold their interest. Some students don’t know how to study right or for this subject or are not inspired to put in the
effort or enough time to do well.
Jaime Escalante from Garfield high school inspired Hispanic teens to pass the Advanced Placement Calculus Test (Stand
and Deliver movie) and Ron Clark who motivated elementary school 5th graders in a Harlem school to excel (The Ron
Clark Story – TV movie) are inspiring teachers, but may not be the common teacher.
---------------------------------------
50% of the effect on student’s good grades and success comes from the student and the parents. What students do
before, during and after classes affect them more than what teachers and the schools do. Students who know and use
good study strategies and learning habits can learn well from most teachers in Middle School, High School and College.
Involved parents help teens do well in school – they help teens manage time and schedules, set up study places, get the
supplies they need, help teens with schoolwork, get them help from others, supervise and reward correctly, go to school
meetings, work with teachers & get involved in school activities.
This means the students and parents have more power to positively affect student learning and good grades than we believed.
This is why SLS is set up to help teens and parents work together. It puts more of the power and responsibility to control
student success and education in the hands of teens and parents as they work with and learn from teachers. One reason
parents don't get more involved is that they often don’t know what to do for their teen. SLS helps parents and those who
supervise teens figure out what they can do to help students right now.
Study after study shows that an involved parent has a great affect on a student’s success in life and in school. When a
student has involved parents, students take studying and school subjects seriously and often get good grades in school.
Involved parents help students do well in school. One reason parents don’t get more involved is that they don’t know what to do.
SLS helps parents and adults figure out what they can do to help the students in their care.
Involved parents do these things to help students: help them with homework and manage time and schedules, set up study
places, get them a tutor if they need one, go to school meetings, volunteer and help at the school, often talk about what higher
education the student will get, show enthusiasm when a student succeeds in school, making sure the student has the supplies
he or she needs at home to succeed in school, supervise and reward students correctly, making sure students eat right, drink
right and get enough exercise, sleep, reading materials, read to them, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
*Minority, At Risk and Struggling Students – Researchers and studies show - effective teachers help at risk students,
minority and struggling students especially in cities the most when teachers can spend enough focused time to help them.
Students who need this help may get an effective teacher in one grade or for a class but don't get enough effective teachers or
the teachers he or she needs who teach to their learning style and needs in the next grade or other classes.
Many Students often don't get enough effective consistent help duringn thheir academic career.
Good Schools also help students in need the most. A good school has the staff, equipment and resources to help a wide
range of students who need extra help. The problem is that students and parents can't always choose which teacher a
student gets or the schools he or she goes to so they may or my not always get the help they need .

Q 6 – How do students use these Study Tools?
A – Students first get the SLS Student Book for their grade level (Middle School – High School – Home School
Community College – 4-year College & University – Adult Returning to College).
Pat is a high school sophomore. She had some problems with some school subjects (Ds) last year, though she
gets ok grades (Cs). She starts to use the SLS 3 Books for High School (Student High School Book + Teen Bonus
Book + Parent Book) with SLS Internet Web Sites. Pat's parents also bought Pat a Subscription so she gets Parent
and Student Web Sites to plan for Pat's higher education. Pat now she has all SLS Tools, the Complete Package.
SLS Student Book has a study skills assessment. Pat takes the assessment and finds out her good and bad habits
and where she needs help. She can take the test or assessment in the book or on a web page
Pat reads the SLS Student Book and picks the study strategies she's comfortable with. SLS has strategies
to use before school, at school, what to do during class, what to do between classes, what to do after school, how to
study at home or other places, how to study with others or by yourself, how to get ready for a test, how to take a test,
what to do when you get your test back, just before bed, etc. Pat choose from these and many other strategies.
After Pat gets used to using the strategies she uses, she adds new ones to be able to handle harder subjects, with
any problems she has with demanding classes, to fit her learning style or as she needs more help. This is the way
that Pat puts together her own Tailored Learning Program using SLS Strategies that work for her
See CORE STRATEGIES for more details

Q 7 – How do students use other SLS Tools, once they’re used to the SLS strategies from the Student Book?
A – Pat learns to use SLS tools, gets comfortable with SLS Core Strategies and starts to use other SLS tools.
The SLS Web pages have 100s of web sites that help Pat with ideas and explanations of experts in school
subject she studies. Several different explanations of subject ideas often helps Pat get the point faster or learn ideas
easier when Pat has problems in a class. Its like having several teachers or professors helping you. One person's
explanation may make more sense to Pat than others who explain the same ideas but in a different way or style.
SLS Tools and Apps help Pat do good research, find information, ideas, images, audio, video, etc. - to store, share,
collaborate with others, combine and use them for class, her life, at works and in other ways.
The SLS Web Page for Parents give Pat's parents 100s of web sites so they can help Pat with school work, help
their other children too, get information about teen & family nutrition & health, teen problems & issues, reference
sources, legal & financial help, etc. This page helps parents get the resources to help their children, especially teens.
The SLS Articles help Pat learn important ideas about going to school, what’s going at her age and grade, how to
learn school subjects, dealing with teachers, parents, plan for the future, etc. Pat's parents get many articles that
help them too!
Pat gets all of these tools so far since she got 3 SLS Books (SLS Student Book + Teen Bonus Book + Parent Book)
See INTERNET TOOLS for more details about the Tools
The following SLS Tools are what Pat gets since her parents bought her a Subscription
Pat reads the Pop Up Page with web sites she can use daily to help her learn SAT & ACT words, math
problems, questions about the tests, general knowledge an educated student should know, etc. Since this is a little
each day, Pat does not feel burdened by the tools and she can fit it into her day, even with everything else she has to
do. It helps her prepare for the SAT & ACT tests in her Senior year.
SLS Articles are written for students (Pat) and parents to deal with school staff, learn new memory and learning
strategies, get ready for higher education and college, what colleges expect, finding financing for college, how to
take classes in colleges to be prepared for their major and career, how to use what they learn in class at work or a
career, what employers are looking from workers and complaints about graduates, trends with jobs & careers, how
parents can help teens and college students, changing careers, etc.

gets the benefits of these sites. Pat can share web sites she finds helpful and has them all at her fingertips. SLS staff
decide what would be most beneficial for SLS members.
SLS Audio and Video clips help Pat learn better when she hears and sees ideas explained. Some students learn
better when they hear ideas explained. Some Students learn better when they see demonstrations of ideas or see
someone explaining ideas. We all learn better when we use more senses. Pat sees video clips of how to approach
certain school subjects and ideas of how other students handle school We learn better when we read an idea, hear
ideas explained and see other explain ideas or how to handle problems
SLS Products and Supplies – Products that support SLS Strategies and help Pat learn better – pamphlets,
index cards, calendars, summaries, etc. These help imprint important strategies and ideas to Pat's mind and
helps Pat recall the ideas easier and faster (these are bought separately and are not part of any SLS Benefits)

Q 8 – How do the Custom Books help students?
A – Individuals, couples, parents, families and groups can add Custom Options to the books they buy for students
adding extra value by personalizing the books and making them One-of-a-Kind. Pat got a SLS books (3 SLS Books)
from a local organization to help her study better. Here's how SLS Custom Books help Pat:
Pat remembers the donor who bought the SLS books since the donor’s name & picture or logo may be in the front
of the book (Special Name Edition & Logo or Image) – The “Smith Family Edition”
Pat is reminded about what’s important about studying and leaning in school and some things about the donor
who got her the books with their well wishes (Dedication Page)
Pat reads the sayings, quotes or examples that boost her motivation to do more and study harder (Sayings) and

Q 9 – Why does it matter that students have his or her own books and materials for his or her Grade?
A – Studies show that when students have his or her own books that are written for their grade level, learning style
and way of thinking, students use the books more often, understand ideas better and they make them personal –
they write notes and comments, draw in, mark and highlight them, etc.
Studies show that when we mark up our book as we read or study them, we remember ideas better and they are
more understandable for us, when students know how to correctly mark and highlight book pages. Students can use
the books when they want and don’t have to fight with a brother or sister to find them. The more often students read
and review ideas, the better chance they’ll use them and get good study skills.
Parents and those who work with teens should have their own Parent book to use effectively and have it on hand
when they need it. Each adult who works with teens should have his or her own book.
There are many study skill books & programs written for the 4-year university student or the top high school students.
SLS has Study Skill Books, Web Sites and Learning tools for the Forgotton Grades: Middle School, Home School,
Community College and Adults Returning to School/College. SLS Books and the materials are written for the level of
learning and ability of that school situation and grade so all students have the tools they need to Succeed!
This is one way that SLS helps students every step of the way for his or her Academic Success

Q 10 – How does the Bonus Book work for students?
A – Kim is a working man who returned to get more education to get a degree and certification from a college. Kim reads
the SLS Study Skills Book for Adults Returning to School to learn some of the best study strategies to understand
class subjects and ideas, handle tests, give presentations and write papers since he's been away from school for a
while and needs the help to get through school quickly.
Kim reads the SLS Adult Bonus Book to review the SLS Core Strategies at a deeper level, since the Adult Bonus
Book has a summary of all SLS Strategies. Kim also gets an Extra set of strategies that add to the effect of SLS
Strategies. He learns which foods help his brain learn and remember ideas better, how to organize and use the
school and office supplies, how to do research, write papers, study for tests when you only have a few days left, and
use the library for help, etc. Kim learns to handle lots more information and ideas to get better grades and understand
ideas even better. (The Teen Bonus Book has the same structure as this adult Bonus Book, but it's written for Teens,
13-18 years old) Kim learns to use some of these strategies at work to get ahead.
Kim is like a lot of adults returning to school He wants to get ahead but it's been some time since he was in a
formal class or training. When Kim was in school, he got ok grades, no brain or anything like that. He got better jobs
by hard work and putting in the years. The problem is he needs to get a leg up since he wants to advance faster and
may need to change jobs or careers to stay in the game and get ahead.
Kim's friends and co-workers realize they are in the same boat – they need more training and education to stay in
the game or to get ahead. There are lots of young bucks, younger workers getting into his field or workers from around
the world who can do some of what he does, all eager to work. Kim knows he needs all the help he can get to get
more of the education and training he wants and needs as quickly as possible. He's seen too many co-workers go
back to school only to find out they can't handle the coursework at this time in their lives. Kim has seen them get
stuck in the job they have since it's just hard to move to something better.
Kim finds the help he gets from the SLS System is what helps him get over the hump to take the coursework he
needs (in classes, on the Internet, online classes, weekend seminars, etc.) Kim does not have the kind of time he
had when he was in school before (high school or college) since he has many more obligations now (family, in-laws,
friends, work, personal interests, etc.) SLS helps Kim get through the coursework easier and faster than if he tried
to do it on his own with no extra help. It's also saving him money since he gets through classes faster and doesn't
have to pay all the extra costs besides tuition and books each extra semester or quarter (parking, gas, school fees,
eating out, etc.). Getting more education quicker helps Kim get a raise sooner, find a better job quicker which puts
more money in his pocket! Kim uses the SLS Student Study Skill Book, Bonus Book, Career Book, Web Sites,
Articles, Audio & Video Clips to train himself in ways that help him get ahead at work.

Q 11 – How does the Career Book help students in higher education?
A – The Career Book is for students in higher education schooling or training (Young adults in college 18 - 24 years
old or older adults 25+ years old). This book gives Kim a way to plan for his job or career while he is in school. It
helps Kim develop good attitudes, figure out what school subjects to take and what experiences to get for his career.
SLS helps students who are in school get a well rounded approach to be ready when they start working. It helps Kim
to change jobs or advance in his career.
The Career book helps students getting education in a Community College, Professional or Career School,
Trade or Technology School or a 4-Year College or University. The whole SLS System helps those who just
graduated from high school or young adults who took some time off from school to explore some things, and
older adults who have been working for a while and need more education and training.
Many of us do not know how to plan well, especially planning our careers or job changes so we need help. Its
better to have plans, even if some of them don't work out or even if plans change than to have no plan.
SLS helps you Plan well. Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail

Q 12 – How do Parents get involved to help students?
A – SLS has a Parent book to help parents and others who work with 12 – 18 year old students, such as step-parents,
adoptive parents, youth club leaders, group home supervisors, camp leaders, etc.
Pat's Parents read the parent book to help them get involved to help Pat get motivated to improve grades and get
good grades. Pat's parents read the SLS Student book strategies aloud with Pat and help her figure out which
strategies to use and how to use them. Pat's parents help her get organized with schoolwork, get her study place
at home set up right, get the supplies Pat needs, remind her to keep on track and help her with some school subjects
or get the help she needs to succeed. Parents can help students find what works best for them. Pat's parents use
many of the web sites that are available for them to help them with parenting, financing college, getting into college,
dealing with teens, health, etc.
Parents with teens with good grades use SLS strategies to give teens a leg up and an EDGE to get into good
colleges and universities. Parents learn what matters to colleges and universities for students applying to get in, in
addition to good grades. Parents can also get some ideas about financing higher education and college. Strategies
in the parent books coordinate with the strategies in the student books so parents and students work better together.

Q 13 – How does SLS help students who are struggling?
A – SLS gives students with low or average grades a study system to learn school subjects with many strategies to
choose from. John is in a Community college and he's getting average and low grades. John starts using the
SLS System for the first time, reads the Student book and tries many strategies. He keeps using the ones that
work for him, and stops using what doesn't work. He keeps using new strategies to find out what works. All SLS
Strategies work, but may not work for him or all students right now, at this point of their academic career. Some that
don't seem to work now may work later in higher grades, in different classes or with more demanding classes
John learns how to use the study strategies and how to combine them to make them powerful. He gets used to using
good strategies as he gets better grades until he can get good grades (As and Bs). If you don't know how to do
things well, you struggle as others pass you by. John doesn't have to struggle so much now. He now has many
of the same success tools that many other students who get good grades have and he's learning how to use them
to help him in school. SLS can help change John from a struggling student to a student who gets good grades and
gives him a shot at success with a college degree or other higher education license, degree, certificate, certificate,
etc. SLS helps John improve his chances for the kind of life he wants to live!

Q 14 – How does SLS help students who get high grades - how does SLS help college students?
A – SLS gives students with good grades new study ideas they may not be using or explains how to use strategies they
do use even better & combine them with other strategies. Lori is in a 4-year university and used the SLS Books
in high school. The SLS System helped her get good grades to get into a good college. She found out what good
colleges were looking for, took AP classes, got higher SAT scores and was prepared for college.
Now that Lori is in college, SLS helps Lori by giving her Advanced SLS Tools she needs to study better and easier.
This gives Lori an EDGE to decide on a major sooner, get schoolwork done quicker, take more classes, take higher
level classes sooner, work while she goes to school, and finish her education and degree sooner. This saves her
money and time! WIth SLS, Lori can get more scholarship funds, get good internships & fellowships, co-author with
professors, study abroad easier and take opportunities when they come, since she's better prepared for them
(Luck = preparation + opportunity). Lori's ability to handle harder more complex ideas, read well, write well and use
some math all give her an EDGE when she starts her career, which she can start sooner.
SLS Career Book shows Lori about how to prepare well for a good career while she's in school. Lori learns
what classes help her prepare for a good career in addition to classes she takes for her major, minor or degree.
Lori learns the the qualities and abilties employers want and look for and she takes time in school to develop them.
Lori has the SLS Complete Package so she has many tools and web sites that help her in her career. Lori knows
how to work hard and smart with a success attitude that backs up her skills, education and knowledge. Lori looks
for those who can help her get a good job and start her career (professors, mentors, contacts, alumni, etc.)
Lori learns leadership, research, critical thinking, public speaking skills which will help her advance in her career(s)
(Tiger Woods is a great golfer and he still looks for ways to improve his game. He hires coaches, changes trainers,
ask advice from his caddy and others, reads , watches videos of his performance and keeps practicing. Many
athletes, artists, musicians, writers, professionals keep practicing and learning to improve, even when they are good)

Q 15 – Why don’t some students know how to study? Don’t they learn study skills in school?
A – Studies show most Elementary, Middle and High School students can get higher grades (As and Bs) if they learn
how to study well. Most students get high grades in some subjects in elementary school. They think that how they
studied for those subjects will work with other subjects, harder subjects and subjects they don't like in Middle School,
in High School and in College. They keep the study habits that seemed to work, but keep their bad habits and don’t
really know what works for new subjects, hard subjects and higher grades.
Many students don’t know how to study some subjects that are harder or they are not interested in. They try to
study and often give up when they get frustrated. They use old study techniques that worked for other subjects or in
lower grades, but they don’t work now. Students use what they know – they keep using the study skills and habits
that they learned in elementary school but which often don't work well enough for Middle School, High School and for
sure college. Students don’t learn how to study higher level subjects in higher grades.
If they’re stuck, students ask teachers, classmates or parents for ideas. We hear what they tell us, see what they
do or try to figure it out on our own (trial and error) Some of these ways work, some are hard to use and some just
don't work so they get in our way and we get bad habits. Students get some good ideas but they’re usually a jumble
of mixed ideas. Some of these study skills work but students don't learn how to study differently for different subjects
or how to study in higher grades. Too often no one shows students good ways to study for many subjects. Many
students are using the study skills they learned in elementary school and hope they will work in Middle School,
High School or College. If we use the wrong tools, we get limited results
Most students don’t have an organized way to study school subjects, and no one teaches them how to study
different school subjects using a student’s strengths or dominant learning style. Students need to learn better study
skills to survive in today’s world since many of them will go back for more training for many jobs and need to learn
and manage the information from many sources in today's world. SLS gives them an organized study system.
Some high schools teach study skills for 1 semester, but most don't teach these skills at all in a focused class.
They use what worked with this teacher at this school but may not work with some subjects, with certain teachers.
Many teachers don't teach good study skills. They assume students already learned them before.
Students need these skills in high school to prepare for higher education or get an edge for the jobs they get since
most jobs will require workers who kow how to handle, search for and organaize informamtion.
Some college or other higher education students often need advanced and more types of study tools and strategies,
but research shows most college students don't get this help. Some who got As and Bs in high school have a
harder time in college since they were not well prepared in high school for the demands of college An ‘A’ in one
high school may mean a ‘C’ in another high school. Students often don’t know which are good study habits annd if
the study skills they use don't work much, they don't know what else to do.
Many adult students (over 25+ years) who want to get ahead or change jobs don’t know how to study, get good
grades, handle college or other higher education training. They didn’t learn good study habits in school (elementary,
Middle or High School). They don't know how to use at work what they learned in school, at a seminar, workshop,
conference, training, etc. They don't advance at work as easily as others who learn how to use the ideas they learn
Some of them did not get good grades in school. Those who got ‘ok’ grades have been away from school for so
long that they need extra help now. If they don’t, they have a harder time, get frustrated and quit or drop out of school.
They’ve wasted time & money and are not any better off. They often need help to advance
SLS Study System has up-to-date study skill books, materials and online tools to help students 24/7, 365
anytime from anywhere when they need the tools or are ready to use them. SLS gives students the tools to get a
higher education, be prepared for a career and learn from many sources for the rest of their lives.

Q 16 – Why should every student try to get an ‘A' – Not everyone is that smart?
A – Students are naturally curious and learn well in elementary school. Students are smart in some subjects but find
other subjects hard so they sometimes need help. Studies find we all can learn any subject if we use good study
and learning strategies correctly, study and review for long enough & often enough, and keep the motivation, intention
and interest to learn. Students often have problems because the ideas they try to learn are hard, confusing or fuzzy
and are not explained, read or stated correctly or for their learning style. Students do well when they learn ideas
correctly stated and clearly explained for his or her learning style.
Your Reach should Exceed your Grasp – Studies show we achieve more if we reach for higher than what’s normal
for us, what we’re used to doing. You should try for more than you can do now. If students try for more 'As' they’ll
get more ‘As’ and more of their grades will improve (get more ‘Bs’ too). Once a student gets better grades in some
subjects, they may work on getting better grades in other subjects and its easier to learn more ideas. Students will
not achieve their goals, get the grades every time they try. The more they try, the more often they can learn from
their mistakes and the more often they will hit the mark and reach their goals of getting good grades. SLS is the
Study Skills System that can help them get their goals and good grades quicker and better and keep them on Top.
We know not all students will get 'As'. Many won't get a "B' in certain subjects on their own. Though you can get
through school with a C or even D, a student's goal shouldn't be just to slide by but to learn as much as he or she
can, as well as they can when they have the time and chance to learn – while they're still in school.
Today and tomorrow's jobs need a workforce of workers who know how to find, manage and handle information,
ideas and technology. We still use physical force in some jobs but we need more skills to handle knowledge as
technology develops. New ideas and ways of seeing or thinking change at a greaer speed than ever before.
We need the tools and skills to help us handle and manage all this information from many sources and learn how
to use it in the work world and in our lives. Learning how to learn these ideas (using study skills) help us handle
information well and effectively to get an EDGE in our lives.
Q 17 – Ok, so students can get higher grades. Why is it worth trying so hard?
A – There are lots of good reasons for students to try for high grades and not just get by. Studies find
– when students study well and get high grades (As & Bs):
1) Students develop good learning skills (studying, research, reading, writing, math) and can use these skills in
in higher grades, higher education, in jobs, careers and life
2) Students learn more ideas easier to use in many different types of jobs or situations later on
3) Students learn how to connect new ideas with ideas they know to understand more about the world, others &
themselves. This helps them when they change or advance in jobs and careers or to do projects
4) Students who learn more ideas, facts and have different experiences can learn new ideas in higher education
easier (community college, 4-year college or university, graduate school, career, job, etc.)
5) Getting high school grades doesn’t guarantee success at work, in a career or job. High grades mean you
understand the ideas to a great depth. It’s up to you to learn how to use the ideas in a job or project, which takes
other skills. It’s best to learn good study skills to learn many ideas, facts and information and use study and
research skills and information at work and home to do well in your life and in your job or career.
6) Employers want to know if you can do a job (have the skills), follow directions and get along with others at work,
but they also want to know if you can learn new ideas, approaches and deal with changes. Having good study
and learning skills and a higher education is one way to show you're capable. It's still up to you to find ways to
make it work at this job in this company with this boss. Some employers want to see a 3.0 GPA for certain
positions or to consider some employees for advanced training
7) Research shows that those with a higher or college education often have better health and lifestyle. This may be
because they earn more money so can afford better medical care, foods and nutrition. They may read, look up
and discuss more with others about issues of health, wealth, lifestyle that can help them stay healthier
The fact is – more students in school today will get more education & training as they advance in a career and
change jobs. If they want to be prepared for tomorrow’s jobs, if we want our country’s businesses to have enough
trained workers to be successful, we need more students to get more higher education and get degrees, certificates,
licenses, certifications, etc. We and companies in the USA compete with others from around the world
Today's jobs need workers with more education or who can learn new ideas and skills all their working lives.
Workers 18+ years old who did not finish High School on average make about $19,915 a year
Workers 18+ years old with a High School Diploma on average make about $29,448 a year
Workers 18+ years old with a 2 year AA Community College Degree on average make about $37,990 a year
Workers 18+ years old with a BA 4-Year College Degree on average make about $54,659 a year
(US Census Bureau – 2006 – Educational Attainment in the USA 18 years and older)
Today's students need better study skills to learn in all situations – traditional and online classes and research
conferences, workshops, seminars, presentations, webcasts, podcasts, books, audio and e-books, downloads, etc.
Many of today's students will get more education and training to advance in a career, change careers, whether
they do this on their own or their employer pays for it whether they go to college, get more education after high school
or start working after they graduate from high school. They need to be prepared to learn more for the rest of their
lives. There is so much information available today to all of us, so may people use the Internet, Facebook, Twitter
to get and share information. Today's students need to know how to use these tools well to compete in Tomorrow's
world for tomorrow's jobs.
Learning how to learn information, facts, how to do things NOW helps students learn new information as he or
she continues his or her academic career or gets involved in a job or career or explores hobbies and appreciation
of culture, music, art, literature, etc. We can have a greater variety of interests that we can explore.
Today’s students need more than a few good ideas that worked for someone else
Today’s students need a Learning System that will help them learn for the rest of their lives
Today’s students need the SLS Study System!

Q 21 – Aren't there other good study skill books and programs?
A – Yes there are. Some are good and some are limited
Some study books give some good ideas that worked for one student but we're not sure if they work for others
Some are written for students going to or in a 4-year college but most students don't go to a 4-Year College
Some authors will share some of the money they make with students who sell the books
Some are formal, others are funny, some are written by big companies or by single authors
Some study books entice you by giving you free PDF books of past best sellers. It seems like a good deal but
most of us won’t read most of these extra books on a computer screen or book reader. Some few people will do it.
Some study skill books have audio CDs summarizing the book ideas but are often much more expensive.
Some universities sponsor & give study skill ideas on the Internet. Problem is they’re often not organized in a
study system, though they are grouped into topics. Many students get frustrated since they don't know how to
combine or use ideas correctly. Many ideas are often written for smart or ambitious students. They are not often
written for students in secondary school or the less organized college student.
Some websites list companies that offer computer learning programs for schools and teachers are expensive
($150 – 199). Students can use them only if their school bought them
Some programs have been simplified for students and explain basic school subjects but they only give one
explanation from one set of authors. You may have to buy new programs next year to keep up to date and they cost
$30 – 40 per program (120 for 4 years). You don't get & if they do, the study skills aren't very organized.
There are study skill programs with many tools for students to help them get organized – binders, pens, pencils,
rulers, calendars, videos, DVDs, study schedules, index cards, class note forms, etc. Some are very costly
($200 - 300 per set) and are out of the price reach of many families.
There are web sites that list 100s of links to web sites that help K-12 students. Some have some help for college
students or those preparing for college, but most don't. Most have long lists of web sites on several layered pages
of topics but some students can get lost with this set up.
Some Tutoring Programs offer study skills help for students who use the program. The tutoring is good and they
may help students with school subjects, but these services are often for a limited time and hard to get into (school
based programs) or are expensive (private ones). Many of these services often don’t give students the support and
help they need after the program is done without extra cost or having to sign up again to get in.
Most of these sites, books and programs do not have help for parents or teen guardians & caretakers and don't
help parents learn to work with teens or how to support college students.
Most of these sites, books and programs don't have help for Teachers that coordinate with the students study
skill strategies so they can work together better .

Q 22 – What does SLS give that other study skill books or programs don’t give?
It seems the prices of SLS Books are higher than some other study books I can get. Why is this?
A – SLS Books are more expensive than some books and less expensive than others. When you buy SLS books,
you're getting a great study and learning system, not just books with some good study ideas.
SLS books have a Structured Study Skills System based on how the Brain Works and Learns. It helps students
learn to organize and use good study skills, especially at important moments in a student’s life – when students start
to have problems, loose interest in school, start to think about going to college or other higher education training (often
in Middle School), and when student change schools or grades (from Middle School to High School, from High School
to College).
Studies show students will use materials written for his or her age and grade level so SLS has books, tools and
materials for students in Middle School, Home School, High School, Community College (Professional or Career
School, Trade or Technology School, training in the Military, etc.), 4-Year College/University and Adults Returning to
School/College. SLS has help for the challenges of his or her academic career for many types of learners.
It's NOT just a one-size-fits-all! as some other books and programs have
SLS has 100s of Sites with many Tools, Apps and Web Sites for each grade. These Sites give students the
help they need since students don't always get a teacher, instructor or professor who explains ideas for his or her
way of learning and understanding; some school subjects are harder; students don't always get the help they need
from each school he or she attends. Students can find tools, Apps and Web Sites that make more sense and
work well for them since they can choose from many sites. See SLS INTERNET TOOLS
SLS puts more power and control of his or her education in student hands to succeed in many different academic
situations, classes, school subjects they need to be ready for many types of jobs and careers in Today's and
Tomorrow's world. SLS helps students Today be be prepared for Tomorrow!
SLS gives parents their own books and Web pages with 100s of good web sites to help them deal with and work
with teens, help them get higher grades, plan for students’ academic future in higher edfucation, find ways to pay for
student higher education and college, learn how to manage and use their finances to help students, student health,
student success, help them plan their career, learn how to support and help college students, etc.
The SLS Multi-Sensory Method helps student use his or her Dominant Learning Style
SLS helps students with Tools to Use anytime they need them – study skills, school subject help, articles about
how to handle school, and how parents and students can work together; audio and video tools that teach students
and parents how best to handle the school experience, interviews, examples of good study habits, summary of SLS
strategies, explanations of how others improved or succeeded, etc. All of these tools help students learn and
remember important strategies and ideas to get ideas to stick better and longer to their mind.
Many of the Articles on SLS Web Pages give students new and fresh ideas which are put into updated books
You can customize the Study skill books so they are more personal from you for the students, so you can have a
greater impact on students while they are being shaped or reshaped through education. You can add these to SLS
Study Skill Books to make them Custom Books: A Dedication Page, Your Edition Name Page, 4 Pages of Quotes,
4-More Pages of Quotes, Photos-Images-Logos, An Insert of Learning Ideas, An Insert of Parenting Ideas

A – SLS is the only Study Skills System with Materials for Teachers that coordinate with the SLS Study Strategies
students get and use to get higher grades and understand school subjects and ideas better. It also has books and
