SLS books are written with special page features so the ideas and strategies of the SLS System are easier to read and
remember. These features are built in the structure of Book Pages. Just one more feature that adds to the SLS Advantage!
The human sensing system is 80% visual. Most of us take in information and ideas based on what we see visually.
We also learn best when we use our dominant learning style and use as many senses as possible.
The SLS System Books are set up to take advantage of these facts.
SLS Strategies are is based on a Multi-Sensory Approach and reality for different Learning Styles.
Our 3 Main Senses – Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic
Our 5 Senses – Seeing, Hearing, Moving, Smell, Taste
Dr. Gardner's (Harvard University) 7 Intelligences for many types of learners – Linguistic,
Logic/Math, Body /Kinesthetic, Musical, Spatial, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal
Left & Right Brain strategies for Male & Female thinking
SLS helps students figure out which learning styles are their dominant styles so they can use the strategies that will
work best for them. All strategies and learning styles work, but some work better for some people than others.
SLS builds on the study strategies you know and helps you learn new ones for the demands of higher grades. This
helps you learn ideas more deeply and remember them longer after the test. You can learn to transfer learning skills
to your job or career.

Our brain is stimulated by several things – variety, bite size writing, ideas that are repeated, consistent size lettering,
larger print for main points, number of grouped points, pictures, etc.
Many of the features on Book Pages are structured to take advantage of how our brains are activated and stimulated.
* Book # and learner level – The grade level of this book is indicated:

<*Section heading large font type – Each main book section has its own font style and size and is very large
* Larger fonts for paragraph first sentence – The first line of each paragraph is in larger bold type so readers see
the main paragraph topic and remember ideas easier. Our minds remember the unusual better
* Regular font-size for paragraph ideas – Paragraphs are printed in regular font size and style – the main body that
explains SLS ideas and strategies
* Small Font Type for idea details – Details and examples that expand on ideas and strategies are in smaller type
so students can glance over them when they read the page again
* Words in ALL CAPS, bold print, underlined, with ****marks & Italicized Words – Using these make words more
easily noticed by our brain and easier to remember – variety stimulates our interest, keep us focused and notice ideas
* Paragraphs are short and to the point – Our eyes and brain can more easily read and understand ideas written in
shorter paragraphs. This helps us read ideas easier – those not used to reading will more often read more of these ideas
* Paragraphs end at the end of a page – Paragraphs aren’t carried to the next page so our eyes and brain can see
whole ideas all at once – this makes it easier to understand ideas
* Idea repeated several times in all books – Repeating some ideas helps remind us and imprint the ideas more deeply
and easily to our brain
* Bullet point give steps of a strategy in groups of 3 – 7points – Our brain remembers ideas easier when they’re
grouped in 3 – 4 points; 7 points is the average maximum number of points our brain can easily remember
* Introduction Pages at the beginning of SLS Books – These give ideas specific to that learning level to motivate
students and help them understand ideas better and prepare them for higher grades
*Clip Art visualize ideas > – Clip art is used for teens to make some points more concrete
All steps of any strategy are explained and presented on 1 single page. This lets our brain see and grasp all study
steps and strategies in one view or glance. It helps improve memory of the ideas.
If the steps to a strategy take up more than 1 page, the steps are written on 2 pages that face each other
(on the left and right pages of a book) so the reader can see all steps at once
Examples and more detailed explanation are in smaller pitch for readers to read if necessary or they can skip
them when they read ideas a second time. Our mind works better when it can scan important points when reviewing ideas
We avoid using the word "Don't" as a command of what not to do (don't do this or that). Studies find that we focus more
on what's said after the word 'Don't' (Don't think of pink elephants!) What do you think of or what does your mind try not to
think of? Your mind focuses on what you were told not to think of – Pink Elephants!
Instead, SLS tells students what to avoid doing and give them an example of what to do to give them a positive action
to focus on. Telling people what to do gives them something to work on and focus on.
SLS books are updated regularly (every 2 - 3 years) so newer ideas and research are included in new editions for the
benefit of Parents, Adults & Teens (PAT) and donors. New ideas come from teachers, professors, research, parents,
successful students, articles, etc. SLS books are always available
SLS books have stories and examples of teens, adults and parents who use SLS strategies so readers can see
SLS ideas used in a practical setting
There are examples that show how SLS can work for students (they are in SLS Books, not shown here)
One example in the books shows how a student using SLS ideas in one day of class
Another example shows how a student uses SLS strategies during a whole week.
A 3rd example shows how 2 parents use SLS ideas to work with teens to improve grades and keep them focused
Finally a 4th set of examples explain how 2 students have different attitudes about studying and school and how
these attitudes affect their grades and what they can do.
