The WORLD has changed –
After World War II, many jobs were available with an income that gave a good living with just a high school diploma.
A high school diploma became a standard minimum need. Before 1980, a person with a college degree earned only
a little more than a person with a high school diploma. A few jobs required a college degree and more jobs let you make
good money with just a high school diploma
Around 1980 – 1985, more workers used a personal desktop computer at work. This affected how we did business.
More people now need more education to do the work. Now a higher education is a standard needed for many more jobs
(College, Jr./Community College, tech, professional, trade school, Voc Ed, 4-year college/university, etc.)
After the Dot Com Bubble burst around 2000, the Internet took off and a lot more business and services used the Web
to buy, sell and provide services. Many of those who worked in Silicon Valley in the computer industry went back to their
home countries and started businesses that compete with the businesses in the USA.
Today workers really need to know how to find and manage all the information we get today using the Inernet,
computer programs, apps, web tools on cell and smart phones, computers, netbooks, tablets, etc.
(Google, Facebook, Apps, Twitter are all only a few years old - 2009)
1. We compete for education, jobs, degrees & training with USA and foreign workers. We work for companies
in the USA & other countries, located in the USA & in other countries.
2. Jobs come and go. Many companies and businesses that did well before run into problems so there are layoffs.
Workers often have a hard time finding new jobs where they live, must move or be retrained to get a good job.
Workers need to know how to learn new ideas and skills to survive today more than ever.
3. We use technology for more jobs, to work and communicate worldwide. Even small companies have access
to information like big companies. We use tech gadgets and tools which often change every 1-2 years so
we must learn to keep up to date
4. We need more and ongoing training and education for today and tomorrow’s jobs since ideas often change
the jobs we get. We go to seminars, workshops, classes, conferences, talks, lectures, updates on or at
meetings, webinars, video conferences, online/Internet, skype, podcasts, videos, audio downloads, etc.
Learning to learn has become even more important now than before!
5. Citizens in other countries get more education. Many of them attend USA universities or they have more
of their own universities in their countries. USA companies compete with companies from other countries
who have employees with higher degrees.
6. More businesses, government agencies, non-profits need people with higher education to handle the complex
world we live in. They need people with talent too, but someone with a good talent who is well educated can do
very well, if they develop their talent well. We are bombarded with so much information today, we need to learn
what to do with it.
7. Studies show that about 80% of manufacturers cannot find educated skilled workers for their entry level jobs. Many
students need to get educated and trained in many areas (not just a 4-year college degree) but often don't get the
training or finish it because of a lack of skills to study many subjects
So we need more working citizens to get a 2-year or 4-year college degree, license, certificate, certifications and
not just people that have 'some college'. They need to complete school so companies can get better contracts and
workers can make more money. A college level degree, license, certificate and certification gives workers more
opportunities and flexibility in today's work world. They can learn more skills and have more tools to use.
We need people who know how to handle the 'Knowledge Society' and jobs we now have. Workers need to 'learn how to
learn' since they will be learning new techniques, skills, information for the rest of their lives. Jobs will change and workers
will change careers. They need to know how to learn effectively and quickly
Not all students need a 4-year college/university degree, but we do need:
More workers with completed training in Trade, Technology, Career and Professional schools
More students prepared to go in science and computer fields so we can keep up our EDGE in technology
If we don't have enough workers with enough training:
> Companies must: Pay more to train workers – Get skilled workers from other countries – Send work to other countries
> Companies can't compete as well with other companies from other countries to get it done
We need more of our own workforce to be better educated and trained – Now!
